The Hobey Baker Memorial Award is very pleased to announce a multi-year sponsorship agreement with Mazamba, Inc. as the presenting sponsor of the Hobey Baker Award, given annually to the top U.S. college hockey player, and the Hobey High School Character Award.

Mazamba is the developer and designer of advanced, high quality sports apparel and equipment. They began in the soccer industry ten years ago and have become a notable player at the grass roots levels of the world’s most popular team sport. Mazamba is now entering the hockey market and partnering with the prestigious Hobey Baker Award to launch the brand.

Mazamba CEO Ronak Shah commented, “We like the Hobey Baker Award for what it represents to amateur and collegiate hockey players, supporters and fans. We also like the High School Character Award developed by the Hobey committee because of its grass roots focus and reach, which has always been a central part of our marketing and sales efforts. We also plan on introducing several interactive programs and events over the next year that involves all levels – the players, the fans and aficionados everywhere to help create a stronger hockey community.”

Jim Nichols of the Hobey Baker Memorial Award Foundation said, “We have made great strides over the past ten years in developing awareness of the Hobey through the media and college hockey programs across the country. Now with Mazamba, we can extend the Hobey message deeper into the grass roots level of hockey. We couldn’t be happier in partnering with an innovative and forward thinking company like Mazamba to help achieve these goals.”

Known as the greatest U.S. amateur athlete of his day, Hobey Baker guided Princeton University’s hockey and football teams to national prominence around the World War I era. He never fouled and epitomized sportsmanship by visiting opponent’s locker rooms following games to shake hands. Hobey joined the U.S. Army and was a member of the fledgling Flying Corp. Having completed his military duties in World War I, Hobey took one last flight to test a repaired aircraft and was tragically killed. He is the only person to be inducted into the college football Hall of Fame and both the American and Canadian Hockey Halls of Fame.

The 2009 Hobey Baker Award winner will be announced from a field of three Hobey Hat Trick finalists on Friday, April 10, 2009 during the NCAA Frozen Four Championships in Washington, D.C. The 29th annual award announcement honoring college hockey’s top player will be televised live during prime time on ESPNU.
